Obverse description The crowned coat of arms of the East India Company occupies the central field, flanked by two rampant lions as supporters. The crest displays the cross of St. George, with heraldic flags or standards flanking it. A ribbon below the shield bears the Company motto 'AUSPICIO REGIS ET SENATUS ANGLIAE' (By the Command of the King and Parliament of England), rendered in an abbreviated form in the legend reading 'AUSP: REG: & SEN: ANG:', which encircles the design together with the date of issue. The overall composition is enclosed within a raised, plain rim.
