The 1835 coinage reform was the East India Company's first attempt at a unified currency across its Indian territories — prior to this, a bewildering array of presidency coinages circulated simultaneously, each with different weights and denominations that frustrated trade and tax collection alike. The quarter anna was the smallest denomination in the new system, and Calcutta, Bombay, and Madras all struck pieces under this type, though mint attribution on individual coins remains contested among specialists.
The series ran until 1849, the year following the annexation of the Punjab — Company territories were expanding faster than the currency could follow.
