The reverse presents a finely detailed high-relief effigy of a Eurasian red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) perched on a branch, facing left and holding a nut to its mouth. The animal's bushy tail curves prominently upward, and its fur is rendered with naturalistic engraving detail. A decorative network of bare branches and oak leaves fills the surrounding field, creating an intricate sylvan frame. The legend ESQUIROL, the Catalan word for squirrel, appears in the lower exergue within a recessed cartouche. |
