Elisabeth Juliane of Holstein-Norburg died in February 1704 after nearly four decades as consort to Duke Anton Ulrich of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. Memorial coinage for ducal consorts at this denomination was unusual — the 1/24 Thaler circulated among ordinary commerce, not just court ceremony — which suggests Anton Ulrich intended her commemoration to reach beyond the nobility. Anton Ulrich himself was a prolific patron of the arts and an amateur novelist of some repute, and his court at Wolfenbüttel was among the more culturally ambitious of the smaller German principalities.
