Bolivia's decimal coinage system was introduced by the reform law of 1863, which replaced the old real-based system inherited from the colonial period. The 1/20 boliviano was among the smallest denominations struck under the new framework, produced at the Potosí mint — the same facility that had been extracting and coining silver from Cerro Rico since the sixteenth century. The two-year production window almost certainly reflects the practical difficulty of circulating such a small silver piece in a country where larger fractional denominations dominated daily transactions.
