| Beschrijving keerzijde | Central device features a large Avis cross (Cross of the Order of Aviz) with flared, fleur-de-lis terminals on each arm, occupying most of the field. The cross is rendered in bold relief against a plain field, with the quadrants either empty or bearing a small pellet or roundel depending on the die variety (Gomes J3 87 and J3 88 respectively). The circumferential Latin legend IN HOC SIGNO VINCES — 'In this sign thou shalt conquer' — runs around the periphery within a beaded border, referencing the Constantinian motto adopted by the Portuguese crown. The overall execution is typical of Lisbon Mint hammered silver production of the mid-sixteenth century. |
