Obverse description Central field displays the crowned Portuguese royal arms — a quartered shield bearing the traditional quinas (five blue escutcheons each charged with silver bezants) surrounded by the castles of Castile — set within a beaded inner border. The shield is surmounted by a royal crown of elaborate design. The circumferential legend in Latin reads IOANNES III REX PORTVG, identifying the issuer as King João III of Portugal. The die work is characteristic of mid-sixteenth century Portuguese hammered silver coinage, with bold relief on the central device and slightly irregular flan edges typical of the period.
