A beaded inner border separates the central cross design from the circumferential Latin legend, which reads + : IOHANES : 3 : R : P : ET : A : D : G :, referencing João III as king of Portugal and the Algarves, lord of Guinea. An outer beaded border runs along the rim. This reverse die, struck in the name of João III, was combined with a Manuel I obverse die, creating the hybrid pairing documented by Gomes. |
