| Reverse description | Central field features a bold plain cross extending to an inner beaded circle, dividing the field into four quarters each containing a single pellet or annulet, characteristic of the Manueline-era half tostão reverse type. A beaded inner border separates the central cross design from the circumferential Latin legend, which reads + : IOHANES : 3 : R : P : ET : A : D : G :, referencing João III as king of Portugal and the Algarves, lord of Guinea. An outer beaded border runs along the rim. This reverse die, struck in the name of João III, was combined with a Manuel I obverse die, creating the hybrid pairing documented by Gomes. |
