Fernando I struck these at Zamora — a Castilian city — during the brief window when Portuguese forces held it as a prize of his first war against Enrique II of Castile. The arrangement was opportunistic: Fernando claimed the Castilian throne through his Burgundian lineage, and operating a mint inside captured enemy territory was as much a political gesture as a practical one. Zamora was surrendered back to Castile under the Treaty of Alcoutim in 1371, which hard-dates the entire production run to roughly two years.
