| Obverse description | Armored half-length effigy of Elector August I facing right, wearing full plate armor and a plumed helmet, holding an upright sword in his right hand and a shield in his left. The figure is rendered in the robust Renaissance style typical of mid-16th century Saxon coinage. A circular beaded inner border frames the portrait, with the Latin legend running along the outer periphery of the coin. |

| Reverse description | Quartered electoral arms of Saxony displayed on a large central shield, incorporating the barry of Hungary, the Rautenkranz diagonal, the crossed swords of the Electoral marshalship, and additional heraldic quarterings. The shield is surmounted by an elaborate crested helm with mantling, and flanked by subsidiary escutcheons. The date 1556 is divided across the field to either side of the central shield. A beaded inner border separates the arms from the surrounding Latin legend denoting the elector's titles. |
