Mesocco's brief numismatic history hinges almost entirely on the Trivulzio family's occupation of the Val Mesolcina, a strategic Alpine corridor connecting Milan to the Graubünden passes. Johann Franz Trivulzio — a cadet of the powerful Milanese military dynasty — held the lordship under increasingly precarious circumstances as the Grisons gradually absorbed the valley. These half testons were struck during that narrow window before the Three Leagues formally annexed Mesocco in 1526, ending local coinage production permanently.
The HMZ census records this as among the rarest issues from any Swiss territorial lordship of the period.
