Nasir al-din Mahmud Shah I ruled Gujarat through a period of intensive Portuguese pressure on the western Indian coast — Vasco da Gama's first voyage reached Calicut in 1498, midway through this coin's possible minting window, and the disruption to Arab-dominated spice trade routes was already being felt in Gujarati commercial networks. The Mustafabad mint, a secondary facility within the Sultanate, produced fractional silver primarily to service local market exchange rather than long-distance trade.
