Mahmud Shah II inherited a Malwa Sultanate already hollowing from within — his reign coincided with sustained Rajput pressure from Mewar under Rana Sanga, who had spent years systematically reducing Malwa's territorial hold. The sultan was eventually captured by Rana Sanga at the Battle of Gagron in 1519, ending Malwa's independence in any practical sense, though the sultanate technically persisted until Sher Shah Suri's final absorption in 1542.
