Obverse description Central floriate cross bearing the conjoined initials 'AE' (for Albertus and Elisabeth) at its center, the whole enclosed within a quadrilobe frame dividing the surrounding Latin legend. The design is executed in a typical Southern Netherlandish hammered style of the early seventeenth century, with the monogram serving as the primary identifying device of the joint rulers. The legend runs along the outer border, interrupted by the arms of the quadrilobe.

Reverse description The eight-fold coat of arms of the Archdukes Albert and Isabella, comprising the multiple quarterings of their dynastic territories, fills the inner field within a beaded or plain inner circle. The surrounding Latin legend carries the abbreviated titles of the rulers and concludes with the mint mark and, where present, the date either at the end of the legend or divided at the top of the coin by the mint mark. The heraldic shield is rendered in the bold, compressed style characteristic of hammered billon coinage of the Spanish Netherlands.
