The denomination mark '1/2' appears to the left of the monogram and 'SP.' to the right, denoting half Speciedaler. Christian VII was nominally king throughout this issue's production, but by the late 1770s he had been effectively removed from governance by his own mental incapacity — diagnosed by contemporaries as madness, now suspected by historians to be schizophrenia. Real power passed first to the queen's lover Johann Friedrich Struensee, who was executed in 1772, and then to Christian's stepmother Juliane Marie and her faction, before his son Frederick took over as regent in 1784. The coins bear a king who had almost no role in the state that minted them.
