These pieces were struck in the name of Henry VIII after his death in January 1547, issued under the regency government controlling the young Edward VI. The debasement of English gold coinage had been aggressively pursued since the early 1540s to fund Henry's continental wars, dropping fineness well below the traditional .995 of earlier Tudor gold. The .833 fineness of this posthumous issue reflects that debased standard inherited — and continued — by the Protectorate.
North 1865 covers several die varieties within this posthumous group, and correct attribution requires close attention to the mintmark sequence used at the Tower between 1547 and 1551.
