| Obverse description | Bare-headed bust of Louis XVI facing left, with elaborately dressed hair tied at the back with a ribbon bow, rendered in the neoclassical style by engraver Pierre-Benjamin Duvivier. The king's portrait is naturalistic and finely modeled, with visible curling locks framing the nape of the neck. A small five-pointed star appears in the lower field below the truncation. The circular legend reads LUDOV·XVI·D·GRATIA, meaning 'Louis XVI by the Grace of God', with the inscription beginning at the lower left and running clockwise. The rim is defined by a continuous border of fine beading. |
