Perctarit ruled twice — deposed in 661 and driven into exile among the Avars, he returned to reclaim the Lombard throne in 671 after the murder of Grimoald's son. This coin belongs entirely to his second reign. The six-dot arrangement distinguishing this variety from related issues is a die-marker that has occupied Lombard numismatists since Arslan's classification work, and its precise significance — workshop indicator, emission sequence, or something else entirely — remains unresolved.
