Isma'il I founded the Safavid dynasty in 1501 after defeating the Aq Qoyunlu confederation, and almost immediately imposed Twelver Shi'ism as the state religion — a politically explosive act that defined Persian identity against Ottoman Sunni orthodoxy for centuries. The coinage issued under his first standard reflects the ideological urgency of that moment, with religious formulae chosen deliberately to mark a break from all preceding regional issues.
Mardin, situated in the upper Tigris region, sat on contested ground between Safavid and rival powers throughout this period. Its output under Isma'il remains relatively limited, making mint-attributed examples more difficult to place than issues from core Persian mints like Tabriz or Kashan.
