The surrounding circular Latin legend reads CONRADVS REX ROMA NC, invoking the name of Conrad, King of the Romans, a traditional inscription maintained on Genoese coinage as an acknowledgment of imperial authority long after it had ceased to reflect political reality. Decorative stops separate the words of the legend, which runs close to the irregularly shaped rim of this hammered gold piece.
