Gelderland was among the earliest provinces to strike the Rijksdaalder series, doing so under persistent financial strain — the Dutch Revolt against Spanish Habsburg rule demanded constant liquidity to pay mercenary troops, and provincial mints were pushed hard throughout the 1590s. The 1594 date places this coin squarely in the period following the Union of Utrecht but well before the truce of 1609, when the war's outcome remained genuinely uncertain.
