The surrounding circular legend, separated by cross pommée stops, reads: MAXIMILI ✣ II ✣ ROMA ✣ IMP ✣ SEM ✣ AVGVSTV, identifying the emperor as Maximilian II, ever august Emperor of the Romans. The portrait is rendered in the vigorous but somewhat provincial style characteristic of ecclesiastical hammered coinage of the Lower Rhine region in the later sixteenth century. |
