| Reverse description | Half-length portrait of Emperor Maximilian II facing three-quarters to the right, shown crowned with the imperial crown and draped in imperial robes, holding an orb in his right hand. The date 1570 is divided in the field to either side of the emperor's figure. The surrounding circular legend, separated by cross pommée stops, reads: MAXIMILI ✣ II ✣ ROMA ✣ IMP ✣ SEM ✣ AVGVSTV, identifying the emperor as Maximilian II, ever august Emperor of the Romans. The portrait is rendered in the vigorous but somewhat provincial style characteristic of ecclesiastical hammered coinage of the Lower Rhine region in the later sixteenth century. |
