| Obverse description | Central field features the royal cipher or crowned initial of Afonso V in Gothic style, struck in low relief on an irregular copper flan typical of hammered medieval Portuguese coinage. The device is boldly rendered though worn, consistent with extensive circulation. A partial circular legend in uncial Latin script surrounds the central motif, reading ALFON REX PORTV A, identifying Alfonso V as King of Portugal. The strike is characteristic of 15th-century Lisbon mint production, with uneven flan edges and variable relief. This obverse die corresponds to the Afonso V type in this hybrid transitional issue. |
