The half real belongs to the coinage reformed under the Ordinance of Medina del Campo in 1497, which standardized Castilian silver for the first time in decades and created the real system that would anchor Spanish colonial currency for the next three centuries. Ferdinand and Isabella's joint titulature on the coin reflects the legal fiction of their union — Castile and Aragon remained separate kingdoms, and Isabella alone held sovereignty over the Castilian mint at Burgos.
The date range extends to 1566 because the dies and nominal authority continued under successive monarchs who retained the Catholic Monarchs' titles on certain issues. Burgos, as one of the oldest royal mints in Castile, struck these well into the Habsburg period without updating the royal name.
