Carlos IV inherited the throne in 1788 as France was collapsing into revolution, and the entire span of his reign was spent lurching between appeasement and resistance toward Napoleon — ending when he was effectively coerced into abdicating at Bayonne in 1808. The small fractional silver denominations issued across this period circulated heavily in both peninsular Spain and the American colonies, where they served the lowest-value transactions that paper simply couldn't reach.
The .806 fineness reflects a standard set during the Bourbon reforms of the previous century, slightly debased from the old 11-dinero colonial silver to reduce drain on bullion reserves.
