Guatemala's fractional silver coinage of this period was issued under the reform monetary system established after the country's 1873 adoption of the real-based decimal structure — a hybrid arrangement that kept traditional denominations while metrifying their weights. The 1/2 real occupied the lowest tier of the silver series and saw hard daily use in local markets, which makes problem-free examples genuinely difficult to locate.
Production ran across more than a decade at the Casa de Moneda in Guatemala City, with known date variations across the series.
