The countermark '65' denotes AH 1365 (1946 CE), applied to earlier coinage circulating in the newly consolidated kingdom as Saudi Arabia absorbed its remaining administrative territories. Abd al-Aziz ibn Saud had formally unified Hejaz and Nejd into the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1932, making this piece an anachronism in strict political terms — issued under a superseded state name well into the kingdom's second decade simply because the infrastructure for fresh coinage couldn't keep pace with demand. The countermarking practice was a pragmatic stop-gap.
