Beneath the horse's hooves lies a vanquished dragon or serpentine creature, symbolising the saint's triumph over evil. The date 1702 appears in the lower exergue. The circular legend S٠CRESCENTINVS٠MARTYR٠VRBINI٠PATRONVS runs around the entire periphery, punctuated by pellets, proclaiming Saint Crescentius as martyr and patron of Urbino. The entire composition is executed in bold Baroque relief, characteristic of the Hamerani workshop, and enclosed by a fine milled border. |
