Clement XI — born Giovanni Francesco Albani — issued this coin during the opening years of the War of the Spanish Succession, a conflict that placed the Papacy in an acutely difficult diplomatic position. His attempt to remain neutral while Spanish and Austrian Habsburg factions each demanded support ultimately satisfied neither, and French pressure would later force his hand toward recognizing Philip V. The Urbino connection here is telling: Crescentinus was the city's patron martyr, and the type reflects Clement's deliberate cultivation of Urbino's loyalty following its formal incorporation into the Papal States in 1631 under Urban VIII.
