Beschrijving voorzijde The obverse features a centrally placed Royal Crown rendered in fine relief against a plain, polished field, depicting the Imperial State Crown with cross pattée at the summit, arched bands, and ornate floral and cruciform decorative elements along the rim of the crown. A continuous Latin legend encircles the design along the outer border, reading VICTORIA D:G: BRIT: REGINA F:D:, separated by dots and set within a beaded inner border. The overall composition is restrained and emblematic, consistent with the experimental character of a pattern issue engraved under the direction of Leonard Charles Wyon. The absence of a royal portrait is a notable departure from standard Victorian coinage practice, lending this pattern a distinctly heraldic quality.

Beschrijving keerzijde The reverse presents a bold and simple typographic design set within a beaded border, with the word PENNY arranged in an arc across the upper field and the large fractional numeral 1/2 prominently displayed in the centre of the coin, rendered with a horizontal dividing bar between the figures. The date 1859 appears in large numerals along the lower portion of the field. Two small rosette or floral ornaments are symmetrically placed to either side of the fraction, serving as decorative stops. The plain, uncluttered layout reflects the experimental nature of this pattern, emphasising legibility and a modernist approach to denomination marking characteristic of mid-Victorian coinage reform proposals.
