A continuous Latin legend encircles the design along the outer border, reading VICTORIA D:G: BRIT: REGINA F:D:, separated by dots and set within a beaded inner border. The overall composition is restrained and emblematic, consistent with the experimental character of a pattern issue engraved under the direction of Leonard Charles Wyon. The absence of a royal portrait is a notable departure from standard Victorian coinage practice, lending this pattern a distinctly heraldic quality. |
