The legend NEWGATE arcs along the upper periphery in bold serif capitals, while the date 1795 appears prominently in the lower field, enclosed within a decorative scrollwork cartouche. A beaded border frames the entire design. The engraving captures the forbidding character of George Dance the Younger's celebrated prison architecture with considerable artistic skill. |

The lettering is executed in bold, well-spaced serif capitals of varying size, filling the flan with a clean typographic composition characteristic of trade token design of the period. A small decorative ornament separates RIDGWAY from HOLT in the lower portion of the field. |
