| Obverse description | Crowned bust of John of Gaunt facing left, occupying the central field with the point of the crown positioned between the letters D and U of the legend, and the front of the crown pointing toward U. A five-pointed star appears below the truncation of the bust. The encircling legend reads IOHN OF GAUNT DUKE OF LANCASTER, terminated by an asterisk. The portrait is rendered in a formal heraldic style typical of late 18th-century provincial token coinage. |
