The 1837 date on these tokens reflects the commercial crisis gripping Lower Canada that year — a collapse in credit and a shortage of authorized small change that left merchants scrambling to conduct everyday transactions. J. Shaw was among several private traders and hardware merchants who commissioned copper tokens to fill that gap, issuing them on their own authority rather than waiting for a colonial administration that showed no urgency in resolving the problem. The tokens circulated widely alongside anonymous bank and bouquet sous issues, often regardless of the issuing merchant's name on them.
