Reverse description The reverse displays a bold multiline inscription occupying the full field, reading J. SHAW & Co. at the top along the upper arc, followed by IMPORTERS OF HARDWARES in three horizontal lines across the center, and UPPER TOWN at the lower center, with QUEBEC along the bottom arc. The lettering is rendered in large, deeply incused serif capitals with a plain border and reeded edge, consistent with the merchant token coinage of Lower Canada circa 1837.
