Thomas Forsaith operated as a hardware and iron merchant in Auckland during the late 1850s, a period when New Zealand's colonial economy was chronically starved of small change. The British imperial coinage arriving in the islands was simply insufficient for retail transactions, prompting dozens of local merchants to commission private token issues from Australian and British die-sinkers. Forsaith's halfpenny belongs to this pragmatic stopgap coinage, struck well before New Zealand established its own monetary infrastructure.
