Reverse description Central device depicting a snipe eel (Nemichthys scolopaceus) rendered in sinuous relief, its elongated knotted form occupying the centre of the field. The design is enclosed by a continuous inner border of raised beads. The denomination legend HALF PENNY is inscribed along the lower periphery in raised Latin lettering. The plain field provides strong contrast to the naturalistic marine subject.

Additional information

Tristan da Cunha issues coins primarily as collector pieces — the island's population of roughly 250 people, entirely dependent on periodic supply ships, has little use for circulating fractional copper. The attribution to St. Helena Dependency reflects the administrative arrangement under which Tristan operates, governed ultimately through Jamestown some 2,400 kilometers to the north.
