Edward Reece operated as a stationer and bookseller in Christchurch, New Zealand, and issued these copper tokens during the 1860s when the colonial government's failure to supply adequate small change forced local tradesmen to mint their own. New Zealand's token coinage of this period was largely sourced from Birmingham die-sinkers, with Reece's pieces attributed to the same broad network of provincial tradesmen's tokens that circulated semi-officially until the government finally suppressed private token issues in 1881. The Andrews and Roth reference spread across three varieties suggests meaningful die variation within this single denomination.
