The shield is supported on the dexter side by an emu and on the sinister side by a kangaroo, both standing on a scrolled ribbon banner inscribed ADVANCE AUSTRALIA. The legend QUEENSLAND arcs along the upper periphery within a beaded border, and the date 1863 appears in the lower field beneath the supporters. D.T. Mulligan operated a store in Rockhampton during the early 1860s, a period when Queensland's remote interior suffered chronic shortages of small-denomination coinage. The colonial government had no practical means of supplying adequate copper to frontier towns, so merchants took matters into their own hands — commissioning tradesman's tokens, typically struck in Birmingham, to fill the gap. Mulligan's piece is one of dozens of such Queensland merchant tokens catalogued from this decade.
The Andrews, Renniks, and Gray references each assign slightly different catalogue numbers to this type, reflecting decades of independent scholarly effort to systematise a notoriously fragmented series.
