The Associated Irish Mine Company operated the Cronebane copper mines in County Wicklow from the 1780s, and like many industrial enterprises of the period, it issued its own token coinage largely because small-denomination regal copper was chronically scarce in Ireland. The Cronebane halfpenny belongs to the broader wave of provincial and commercial token issues that flooded Britain and Ireland between roughly 1787 and 1797, filling a gap the Royal Mint was unwilling or unable to address.
DH#12 places this within Dalton and Hamer's classification of Irish tokens — a series where die-link relationships and edge lettering variants significantly affect rarity. The Wicklow mining tokens as a group are less common than their Birmingham-struck English counterparts, reflecting smaller issue quantities tied directly to mine payroll demands rather than general commercial circulation.
