Produced during the reign of Sverre Sigurdsson, whose claim to the Norwegian throne sparked a civil conflict — the Bagler-Birkebeiner wars — that would fracture the kingdom for decades. Sverre's mints operated under severe political pressure, and the thin, bracteate-style fabric of these coins reflects both the period's monetary instability and the difficulty of maintaining consistent silver supply in a kingdom at war with itself and with the Church, which excommunicated Sverre in 1194.
