| Reverse description | Incuse mirror image of the obverse type, as is characteristic of bracteate coinage struck on a single thin flan. The reverse displays the sunken impression of the crowned bust with pellet ornaments flanking the figure, the design being the natural consequence of the single-sided hammered bracteate technique. Surface shows the typical crinkled and irregular flan edges associated with Norwegian medieval bracteates of this period. |

Produced during the reign of Sverre Sigurdsson, whose claim to the Norwegian throne sparked a civil conflict — the Bagler-Birkebeiner wars — that would fracture the kingdom for decades. Sverre's mints operated under severe political pressure, and the thin, bracteate-style fabric of these coins reflects both the period's monetary instability and the difficulty of maintaining consistent silver supply in a kingdom at war with itself and with the Church, which excommunicated Sverre in 1194.
