Reverse description Incuse mirror image of the obverse type, as is characteristic of bracteate coinage struck on a single thin flan. The reverse displays the sunken impression of the crowned bust with pellet ornaments flanking the figure, the design being the natural consequence of the single-sided hammered bracteate technique. Surface shows the typical crinkled and irregular flan edges associated with Norwegian medieval bracteates of this period.

Additional information

Produced during the reign of Sverre Sigurdsson, whose claim to the Norwegian throne sparked a civil conflict — the Bagler-Birkebeiner wars — that would fracture the kingdom for decades. Sverre's mints operated under severe political pressure, and the thin, bracteate-style fabric of these coins reflects both the period's monetary instability and the difficulty of maintaining consistent silver supply in a kingdom at war with itself and with the Church, which excommunicated Sverre in 1194.
