| Obverse description | Laureate and draped bust of King Miguel I facing right, wearing a laurel wreath and an ornate mantle adorned with a decorative chain collar and jewelled border. The effigy is rendered in high relief in a classical style. The circular legend MICHAEL·I·D·G·PORTUGALIÆ·ET·ALGARB·REX reads around the periphery, interrupted at the left by the truncation of the bust. The date appears in the lower exergual area below the bust. |

| Reverse description | The Portuguese royal coat of arms, a square shield charged with five escutcheons in cross arrangement each bearing five bezants, and bordered by a bordure of seven castles, occupies the centre of the field. The shield is surmounted by the Portuguese royal crown and flanked on either side by symmetrical sprays of acanthus-like foliage with small blossoms, all set against a plain field. No legend appears on the reverse, the design relying entirely on the heraldic imagery. |
