| Obverse description | Right-facing draped bust of Queen Maria I, rendered in high relief with elaborate Baroque coiffure adorned with floral ornaments, braided tresses, and pearl-like details cascading over the shoulder. The effigy occupies the full height of the field, conveying a stately and regal portrait characteristic of late 18th-century Portuguese coinage. The date 1789 appears in the lower exergual area beneath the truncation. The circumferential legend MARIA I D G PORT ET ALG REGINA runs along the periphery, interrupted by the bust, in Roman capital letters. |

| Reverse description | Elaborate crowned Portuguese royal coat of arms at centre, comprising the escutcheon with the five quinas (inescutcheons bearing five bezants) and the bordure of castles, all set within an ornate Baroque cartouche with volute and acanthus scrollwork. The royal crown surmounts the shield from above. The entire composition fills the field to the periphery and is devoid of a surrounding legend, presenting a bold and decorative heraldic design typical of Maria I gold coinage. |
