The half pardau was the workhorse denomination of Portuguese India's silver coinage, circulating alongside the indigenous currencies of the Konkan coast in an economy where Mughal rupees, local fanams, and European trade coins competed daily for acceptance. João V — flush with Brazilian gold revenue — nonetheless maintained the Goa mint's silver output to sustain Portuguese commercial credibility in the Estado da India, by then a shadow of its sixteenth-century dominance. The two Gomes references reflect documented die variants within this short three-year run.
