Shah Alam II ruled as Mughal emperor for nearly five decades, yet spent much of that reign as a pensioner of whoever held military dominance in northern India — the Marathas, then the British. The Jhansi mint operated under Maratha authority during this period, striking coins in the emperor's name as a political formality rather than any acknowledgment of actual Mughal power. The practice of invoking a weakened emperor's name on local coinage was standard Maratha policy for maintaining a veneer of legitimacy.
After Shah Alam was blinded by Ghulam Qadir in 1788, the fiction became starker still.
