The Libertad series launched in 1982 as Mexico's answer to the American Silver Eagle and Canadian Maple Leaf — a bullion program designed to monetize the country's position as one of the world's largest silver producers. The half-ounce denomination was added later and has always been the quieter sibling to the one-ounce, with lower mintages across virtually every date in the series.
Certain years from the 1990s, particularly the mid-decade issues, were struck in quantities under 10,000 pieces — figures that were not widely publicized at the time and only became apparent to collectors years after the fact.
