| Description de l’avers | The obverse displays the national arms of Costa Rica at center: a shield surmounted by an ornate scroll-work crest and depicting three volcanoes rising from the sea with a sailing vessel in the foreground, two additional ships in the background, and a rising sun with rays above the central peak, flanked on either side by panels bearing sheaves of wheat and a cornucopia. Seven five-pointed stars arc across the upper interior of the shield, representing the provinces of Central America. The shield is framed by two laurel branches tied at the base with a ribbon, and the date 1850 appears in the lower field beneath the wreath. The circular legend REPUBLICA DE COSTA RICA runs along the periphery. |

| Description du revers | The reverse presents a full-length standing figure of an indigenous woman facing left, partially draped and wearing a feathered headdress, holding a bundle of arrows in her lowered right hand and resting her left arm upon a square stone pedestal. The pedestal bears the independence date inscription 15 DE SETE. DE 1821 in four lines. The denomination 1/2 OZ. is engraved on the base beneath her feet. The legend AMERICA CENTRAL arcs across the upper field, while the fineness mark 21 Qs. appears at the lower left and the engraver's initials J.B. are positioned at the lower right. |
